Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Conemaugh Valley's boys’ basketball team is off to their best start in a decade.
First year head coach Tre'von Williams has transformed the Blue Jays’ hoops program in his short time there, but just a couple years ago he was ready to leave basketball behind.
"When my dad passed away, I decided to give up basketball."
After a successful career at Greater Johnstown, Tre'von Williams went on to play at Penn State DuBois, but in his final season, his life changed.
His senior season was cancelled by the pandemic and his father passed away.
"I didn't actually get to live out my whole college career because of COVID and then with the passing of my father, I just didn't want to play basketball anymore."
But Williams had a relationship with basketball that couldn’t be severed.
"Basketball was still always a part of me and it was my way to get away from everybody, so helping others was another thing that was a part of me as well."
Williams has led Conemaugh Valley to a 9-1 record thus far, their best start since 2012, but he doesn't see himself as the traditional head coach.
"I just have the title of head coach. I'm really just a mentor that knows the basketball game and I love helping others and I love basketball."
Now, Williams says he's sharing some life lessons with his players that he's learned both on and off the court.
"Control what you can control. You can only control so much. If it's not in your hands or your control, don't worry about it, you got to let it go."
Even though they're off to a great start, Williams says that now that the second half of the season is here, the team is treating the season like they are 0-0.
